One of the challenging task was to <em><strong>install SSL Certificate on IIS 6.0 Windows Web Server<\/strong><\/em> in which my company&#8217;s web portal is running. I&#8217;ll be posting a series of my experience and tips on my future post regarding&nbsp; issues encountered&nbsp; during the re-installation. But I&#8217;ll be sharing the SSL Certificate installation for now.<\/p>\n<h2>WHAT IS AN SSL CERTIFICATE?<\/h2>\n<p>Before I go to the process let me define a SSL Certificate for you first. Authentication and Verification: The<strong> SSL Certificate<\/strong> has information about the authenticity of certain details regarding the identity of a person, business or Web site, which it will display to visitors on your Web site when they click on the lock or trust mark (Thawte Secured \u00ae Seal).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1788 size-full\" title=\"thawte-SSL-Certificate\" src=\"http:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate.jpg\" alt=\"Install Thawte SSL Certificate IIS 6.0 Windows Web Server\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Encryption: The<strong><em> SSL Certificate<\/em><\/strong> also enables encryption, which means that the information exchanged via the Web site cannot be intercepted or read by anyone other than the person for whom it is intended. In the same way that a physical identity document or passport may only be issued by the relevant country\u2019s government officials, an SSL Certificate is most reliable when issued by a known Certificate Authority (CA). The CA has to follow very strict rules and policies about who may or may not receive a SSL Certificate. This means that when you have a valid SSL Certificate from a trusted CA, it implies a higher degree of trust.<\/p>\n<p>In the same way that a physical identity document or passport may only be issued by the relevant country\u2019s government officials, an <strong>SSL Certificate<\/strong> is most reliable when issued by a known Certificate Authority (CA). The CA has to follow very strict rules and policies about who may or may not receive a SSL Certificate. This means that when you have a valid SSL Certificate from a trusted CA, it implies a higher degree of trust.<\/p>\n<h2>Installing Thawte SSL 123 Certificate<\/h2>\n<p>In this procedure, I&#8217;ll demonstrate the installation of <strong>Thawte&#8217;s SSL 123 <\/strong>Certificate. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thawte.com\">Thawte&#8217;s<\/a> is the CA or Certification Authority for the certificate that I&#8217;ll be demonstrating.<\/p>\n<p>First of course you need to have an <strong>IIS 6.0 Web Server<\/strong> installed this will also applies on other version of IIS but with slight difference in the User Interface.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1:Request for SSL Certificate<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the <strong>Internet Services Manager (IIS)<\/strong>: Click <strong>Start <\/strong>&gt;<strong> All Programs<\/strong> &gt;<strong> Administrative Tools<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Internet Information Services (IIS) Manger<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1804 size-medium aligncenter\" title=\"thawte-SSL-Certificate-03\" src=\"http:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-03-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"Install Thawte SSL Certificate IIS 6.0 Windows Web Server Procedure 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" border=\"1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-03-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-03.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Under <strong>Web Sites<\/strong>, right-click your web site you wish to install the SSL and select<strong> Properties<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Directory Security <\/strong>tab<\/li>\n<li>Under <strong>Secure Communications<\/strong>, click <strong>Server Certificate<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Web Site Certificate Wizard will open, click<strong> Next<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1808 size-medium aligncenter\" title=\"thawte-SSL-Certificate-04\" src=\"http:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-04-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"Install Thawte SSL Certificate IIS 6.0 Windows Web Server Procedure 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" border=\"1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-04-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-04.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Create a new certificate<\/strong> , then click<strong> Next<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Prepare the request now, and send it later,<\/strong> then click<strong> Next<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1822 size-medium aligncenter\" title=\"thawte-SSL-Certificate-06\" src=\"http:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-06-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"Install Thawte SSL Certificate IIS 6.0 Windows Web Server Procedure 3\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" border=\"1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-06-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.qlickcafe.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/thawte-SSL-Certificate-06.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Enter and configure <strong>Name and Security Settings<\/strong>. then click <strong>Next<\/strong><strong>Important:<\/strong> Make sure to enter relevant and easy to remember name. On this example we entered 2048 bit length, a little higher than the standard. <strong>Internet Information Services (IIS) Manger<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Under <strong>Web Sites<\/strong>, right-click your web site you wish to install the SSL and select<strong> Properties<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Directory Security <\/strong>tab<\/li>\n<li>Under <strong>Secure Communications<\/strong>, click <strong>Server Certificate<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Web Site Certificate Wizard will open, click<strong> Next<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Process the Pending Request<\/strong> <strong>and Install the Certificate<\/strong>, then click<strong> Next<\/strong><strong>Important<\/strong>: The pending request must match the response file. If you deleted the pending request in error you must generate a new CSR and replace this certificate.<\/li>\n<li>Select the location of the certificate response file, and then click<strong> Next<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>SSL Port<\/strong>. The default port is <strong>443<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Read the summary screen to be sure that you are processing the correct certificate and then click<strong> Next<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>At the confirmation screen, verify the information and click<strong> Finish<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I tried to make this as simple as possible if you have encounter problem regarding this post, please feel free comment or ask question.
