How to Remote Administer your QNAP – Network Attached Storage

Hi everyone! It has been a while since i made a post about Qlick Tips & Tricks. I don’t want to make promises but I’ll do my best to give you solutions and qlick tips  on weekly basis. You have to forgive I have been very offline for almost two years with my offline job as an IT and Accounting Manager at the same time. Since I’m into accounting…. Soon, I might include accounting topic that can help you around with BIR (Taxation requirements) and accounting related solutions that I have encountered. Anyways let me share this topic on how to Remote Administer your QNAP – Network Attached Storage.

Meantime, I would like to share something about Network Attached Storage. In this post I will try to provide a step by step guide in configuring your QNAP NAS Device for Remote Administration.  If you have not yet that familiar with network attached storage or commonly known as NAS, may I suggest you skim thru my previous post about NAS (Network Attached Storage)http://www.qlickcafe.com/blogs/?s=network+attached+storage

Before we start, let me define this guide and what it is all about.

Objective:

Configure a QNAP NAS Device and your Router for Remote Administration using an internet connections with a static public ip. This guide is ideal for connecting your home pc to your office NAS device.

Prerequisite:

  1. Public Static IP Address + Internet Access:  you will need to have a Public Static IP Address for your NAS device and an internet access (of course).
  2. Router: you will need a router so that you can route or point incoming data to your QNAP Network Attached Storage device. I’m using a Linksys RV082 8 port VPN Router. But same procedure applies to kind or brand of router available.
  3. Network Attached Storage: for this “How to” I will using QNAP TS 420 Network Attached Storage with Firmware updated to Turbo NAS 4.1.4 (builde 20150522) with 1TB WDC WD10EFRX drive.

Configuring QNAP:

For this guide, I will be presuming you have successfully install the hard drive and the firmware as well (if not yet I will be cooking another guide/post for that one). Meantime below is the step by step instruction:

1. Login in as Administrator on your web browser.

You can use also the QNAP finder to locate the NAS and login.

2. Go to Control Panel/System Settings/General Settings/System Administration/

By default, the System port is at 8080. For security reason I often change the default port to a different number. For this example, I choose 32201. This is to discourage random pinging of the device. But you want it, you can still leave as it is.

3. Go to Control Panel/System Settings/Network/TCP-IP

If you have a DHCP server enabled, just take note of the local ip address in this dashboard. If not… you need to configure the QNAP NAS local ip address in the Qfinder or in this dashboard. In this demo I use 192.168.0.19.

In you have configure this at you NAS side and take note the system port number and ip address, you’re now ready to configure your router.

Configuring Router:

Now we will configure the router, in this case I will be configuring a Linksys VPN router. But, if you’re using a different kind of a router… same procedure may applies:

  1. Login to your Router Dashboard.
  2. Look for a module or a form that will let you configure port forwarding.
  3. Define a port service and assign the port number and ip address you have noted from your QNAP configuration. In this case, we use port 32201 and ip address: 192.168.0.19.
  4. Then look for the system WAN IP address which usually given by your Internet Provider. In our case we’re subscribe with PLDT Small Business Lite which bundled with (1) one public static ip address.
  5. Make sure to save everything and take note of your ip address.
  6. You can now remote administer your QNAP NAS using your browser and your public ip address.

Format: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxx:32201

where as xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is your public ip address

Summary

Using this configuration you can also configure your QFILE for Android apps which you can access file or folder shared under your QNAP NAS device. But that would be another post coming. Meantime, if you have problems with the configuration above please feel free to comment  or ask question using the comment form below. Hope I was able to help you out with How to Remote Administer your QNAP – Network Attached Storage. Thank you!
