How to Lessen Your Administration Headaches by Deploying NAS.

What is a NAS or a Network Attached Storage?

Technically, NAS stands for Network Attached Storage – a Network Attached Storage unit can be a computer connected to a network that only provides file-based data storage services to other devices on the network. Although it may technically be possible to run other software on a NAS unit, it is not designed to be a general purpose server. For example, NAS Server usually do not have a keyboard or display, and are controlled and configured over the network, often using a browser.  NAS devices offer better scalability, fault recovery and general manageability than current client-server LAN based approaches for real-time and data intensive applications. Whether you work in a switched or a shared-access environment, NAS devices allow server-to-server and server-to-client Gigabit-rate data communications without bogging down your LAN environment.

To help us further understand what is NAS. I interviewed Maxtec Solution Inc. regarding this matter. MAXTEC SOLUTIONS INC. is a Philippine-based company that distributes and provides systems integration and related services such as IT consultancy, to address the demands of the different industries, and help them lower the cost of IT management. They define NAS as a general centralized storage to provide large amount of data storage for its client computers. One of their main products is Synology NAS Solutions, They explained to me how a NAS Solutions can enable simpler and lower cost systems such as a fault-tolerant email and web server systems by using Synology NAS Solutions and its  Disk Station Manager 3.0.

Thanks to Ms. Lei Mendiola – Marketing Officer of Maxtec Solutions, they will let me (devil smile) abused …. joke! … review one of their Synology NAS DS710 model for a few weeks so that I can evaluate it and see how it will resolve some of my problem . Ms. Lei will deliver the DS710 tomorrow that’s why I’m very excited to try it out in our network environment.  Their technical team also told  me that I can use it to deploy a fault tolerant configuration for my Windows 2003 File Server. They said, with the DS710 I can also run an apache server which can be used in deploying Web Service Solutions.  “hmmmm, its interesting right?”.  But aside from deploying it as a backup storage for my file server; I’m planning to install  and test it as an email server in our network environment.

So stay tune guys, on my next articles I will share to my readers my Synology DS710 experiences  and provide you a step by step procedure in deploying Fault Tolerant NAS Solution configuration.
