Today we’re celebrating Ash Wednesday, It signifies the first day of Lent, the 40-day period (not including Sundays) of fasting and repentance leading up to Easter or “Pasko ng Pagkabuhay”.

The ashes used on Ash Wednesday are usually derived from burning the blessed palm branches left from the last Palm Sunday or “Palaspas” celebration. The ashes are blessed, sprinkled with holy water and fumigated with incense. Filipino Catholics believe that if we leave the ashes on, “we’re carrying the cross out into the world.” For me the Ashes on our forehead is a reminder of our renewal of faith and God’s gift to the world…
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
John 3:16
Reflections:
“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing, some have unwittingly entertained angels.”
Hebrews 13:2
